This expert knowledge and care is why we are the top-rated choice for both beginners and seasoned rafters.
-
HazardPlay™ Raft(s)
Every group is equipped with HazardPlay™ professional-grade rafts that are custom-engineered specifically for the Provo River’s rocky sections and narrow channel. -
USCG-Approved Life Jacket
Safety is our #1 priority. Your Provo River Rafting trip includes professional-grade life jackets for all participants that are fitted to your size. Whether you are a confident rafter or a first-timer, our high-buoyancy personal flotation devices (PFDs) ensure you are safe and compliant with river regulations.
-

For self-guided trips, we handle the logistics of getting you to the launch area, helping you launch your raft(s) onto the river, and meeting you at the take-out point. For guided trips, we'll be with you for the duration of your trip. Parking is free.
Provo River Rafting Prep: What to Bring & Wear
Planning ahead is the key to a great day on the water. Because the Provo River is a natural mountain environment with variable temperatures, arriving with the right clothes ensures your comfort and safety from the first ripple to the final take-out.
We provide the HazardPlay™ rafts and PFDs, but you are responsible for your personal attire. To avoid losing valuables or getting a "canyon sunburn," we recommend the following:
-
Required Footwear
Secure footwear is mandatory. Flip-flops and slides are easily lost and do not provide protection from the rocky and uneven riverbed. Best Options: Strapped adventure sandals (Chacos/Tevas), water shoes, or old sneakers.
-
High-Altitude Sun Protection
At our elevation, UV rays are intense and reflect off the water. A "rafting tan" happens fast, so come prepared to shield your skin. Best Options: Waterproof SPF 50+, polarized sunglasses with a retainer strap, and a brimmed hat.
-
Performance Clothing
Cotton is not recommended. Cotton acts like a sponge and will keep you cold for the entire 2-2.5 hour trip. Opt for synthetic materials that wick moisture and dry quickly. Best options: Board shorts, rash guards, or athletic "dry-fit" shirts.
-
River Comfort
The moment you get out of the water and back to your car, you might want to change clothes and shoes. What to bring: Keep a dry towel and a change of clothes in your car. You might want to keep hydrating drinks and snacks in your car to enjoy after your float.

Provo River Rafting FAQs & 10 Tips for a Perfect Trip
Below are the most common questions we get from guests and families. Look for the Tips below to find our expert advice on safety, gear, logistics, and choosing the right trip.
Is Provo River rafting safe for kids?
Tip #1: Yes — Provo River rafting in Provo Canyon is considered safe for children when booked with a professional outfitter. The Provo River features primarily Class I–II rapids, which are beginner-friendly and appropriate for families. Kids ages 3+ are welcome.
How cold is the Provo River for rafting?
Tip #2: We recommend wearing quick-dry clothing, secure water shoes, and avoiding cotton. The Provo River stays cold year-round, even during summer. Water temperatures typically range between 45–55°F. Because the river is fed by mountain reservoirs and snowmelt from the Uinta Mountains, it does not warm up significantly during the day. On cooler days or evening Sunset and Moonlight rafting trips, a light layer may be helpful. Despite the cold water temperature, Provo River rafting is comfortable and enjoyable for families, first-time rafters, and visitors when everyone is dressed appropriately.
What makes your rafts different from other outfitters and rental shops?
Tip #3: To reduce issues, float in durable, commercial-grade rafts on the Provo River. Our fleet features HazardPlay™ paddle rafts, designed specifically for the dimensions and flow patterns of the Provo River in Provo Canyon. Our 9-foot rafts are intentionally sized for tighter maneuverability, improved tracking, and smoother navigation through the Provo’s narrow channels. Because we standardize our Provo River rafting fleet around this design, on guided rafting trips, guides can maintain more consistent boat spacing, line control, and group flow. This improves on-water efficiency and enhances overall trip safety. For self-guided Provo River rafting trips, guests also benefit from responsive handling and balanced performance, making the experience more intuitive for first-time paddlers and more enjoyable for active groups.
Do I need a reservation for Provo River rafting?
Tip #4: Book Provo River rafting trips early because trips sell out, especially on Saturdays. Yes, reservations are highly recommended. If you'd need to cancel or reschedule, we offer free date changes and a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of your scheduled launch time. If daytime rafting is sold-out, consider a Sunset Provo River Rafting trip.
What should I wear for Provo River rafting?
Tip #5: Dress for comfort and the weather. Secure water shoes or strapped sandals are required (no flip-flops) because the rock in the river is sharp. A long-sleeve quick-dry shirt is strongly recommended to prevent sun exposure. During sunny summer days, guests wear swim suits, short-sleeved t-shirts, and tank tops. On Sunset and Moonlight Provo River Rafting trips, a light jacket and long pants are recommended. Your feet and ankles will get wet.
Where do we meet for the trip?
Tip #6: The most popular parking and river access location for Provo River rafting is the Deer Creek State Park river launch area. The state park vehicle day-use fee is covered in your Provo River rafting reservation. Do not pay the parking fee, and we will give you a parking pass. All of our meeting locations are in Provo Canyon at designated spots provided in your confirmation email. We do not meet at our Orem office for river launches.
Are life jackets required for Provo River rafting?
Tip #7: You must wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket for any floating and boating activity on the Provo River. Yes, and we offer all guests US Coast Guard approved life jackets (personal flotation devices, PFDs) and carry sizes from toddlers, youth, extra small to XXXL adult for rafters. Our jackets are inspected, clean, and comfortable to wear for the duration of your trip.
What’s the best time of year to raft the Provo River?
Tip #8: Provo River rafting is safe and fun from early June through late September, when river levels and Utah air temperatures are ideal. To avoid crowds, consider a daytime trip on Mondays through Thursdays, or an evening Sunset or Moonlight Provo River rafting trip. June has higher water, making guided rafting the best option. July daytime trips may be crowded. August and September are great months for wildlife sightings and viewing the fall colors in Provo Canyon.
How long does a Provo River rafting trip take?
Tip #9: When launching at the Deer Creek State Park Provo River launch site and floating 5.5 miles, be prepared to spend at least 1.5-2 hours on a Provo River rafting trip. A typical rafting trip lasts 90-120 minutes, depending on the river stretch and the pace of your trip. This includes time for you to shuttle, receive instruction, launch, float, and exit the river safely.
Can I bring drinks or snacks during my Provo River rafting trip?
Tip #10: Bring a non-glass bottle with water or sports drinks to stay hydrated because your Provo River rafting trip duration is approximately 2-2.5 hours. Yes, you are welcome to bring small snacks, however, you will be floating continuously and paddling on the river. For a full experience, consider booking a Sunset or Moonlight Guided Provo River rafting trip to enjoy our catered riverside refreshments with your group.
