Is Tubing the Right Choice? 6 Reasons to Upgrade to a Raft or Kayak

Stop! If You Identify with Any of These 6 Groups, Tubing is NOT Your Best Ride.

  • Youth Groups & Large Camps:

Managing a large group of kids on the river is a huge responsibility. It’s often difficult to accurately gauge every individual’s swimming confidence and "river-smarts" in a crowd. For youth groups, rafts and kayaks keep the kids together, supervised, and safe.

  • Non-Swimmers:

Tubing requires "self-rescue" skills. If you have guests who aren't confident in the water, our guided rafts provide a professional pilot so they can relax and soak in the scenery without the stress of navigating solo.

  • Families with Young Kids:

Kayaking and rafting, with parents and adults beside them, are best for children 12 years and younger who aren't quite ready for the physical demands and solo responsibility of a tube.

  • Comfort Seekers:

Tubing means sitting directly in 45°F water for two hours. Rafts and kayaks keep your group high and dry, making it the much better option for those who want the views without the "brain freeze."

  • Company & Corporate Crews:

Tubing is a solo mission—once you’re in the current, your group will naturally spread out. For team building, tubing is often "anti-social." Our rafts keep your team in the same boat, allowing for conversation, shared laughs, and a collective experience that everyone, regardless of their athletic ability, can enjoy together.

  • Seniors & Accessibility Seekers:

The physical demands of tubing, specifically core stability and the agility needed to re-enter a tube in the current can be strenuous. We recommend rafts and kayaks for a more ageless and inclusive adventure. Rafts and kayaks offer easier boarding, a comfortable seat with back support, and a stable platform on the river.

Pro Tip: If your group has a mix of "hardcore adventurers" and "scenery seekers," we recommend a Split Trip. Reserve a mix of kayaks and rafts so your whole group can stay in "party formation" regardless of individual swimming ability.

What's Included with Your Provo River Tubing Trip

Unlike other outfitters where hidden fees for shuttles or gear can surprise you at check-in, your $35-$45 reservation is all-inclusive. We provide the highest quality equipment and logistics in the canyon so you can focus on the fun.

  • Solo Tube

We don't use standard vinyl tubes. Every guest is equipped with a HazardPlay™ professional-grade tube. These are custom-engineered specifically for the Provo River’s rocky sections and narrow channel. They offer superior durability, specialized handles, and a stable ride that cheaper rentals simply can’t match.

  • USCG-Approved Life Jacket

Safety is our #1 priority. Your booking includes a professional-grade life jacket that is fitted to your size by our expert dock staff. Whether you are a confident swimmer or a first-timer, our high-buoyancy personal flotation devices (PFDs) ensure you are safe and compliant with river regulations.

  • Canyon Shuttle

Your reservation includes a seat on our complimentary river shuttle. We handle the logistics of getting you to the launch area and helping you get on the river. We'll meet you at the end of your float, saving you time and the headache of congested canyon parking. Parking is free.

  • River Safety & Flow Orientation

Before you hit the water, our team provides a comprehensive river orientation. We walk you through the current river flows, point out the best lines to take through the ripples, discuss obstructions, and give you "self-rescue" tips. This expert knowledge is why we are the top-rated choice for both beginners and seasoned tubers.

Provo River Tubing Prep: What to Bring & Wear

Planning ahead is the key to a great day on the water. Because the Provo River is a natural mountain environment with water temperatures averaging 45°F, arriving with the right clothes and gear ensures your comfort and safety from the first ripple to the final take-out.

We provide the HazardPlay™ tubes and PFDs, but you are responsible for your personal attire. To avoid losing valuables or getting a "canyon sunburn," we recommend the following:

  • Required Footwear

Secure footwear is mandatory. Flip-flops and slides are easily lost and do not provide protection from the rocky and uneven riverbed. Best Options: Strapped adventure sandals (Chacos/Tevas), water shoes, or old sneakers.

  • High-Altitude Sun Protection

At our elevation, UV rays are intense and reflect off the water. A "tubing tan" happens fast, so come prepared to shield your skin. Best Options: Waterproof SPF 50+, polarized sunglasses with a retainer strap, and a brimmed hat.

  • Performance Clothing

Cotton is not recommended. Cotton acts like a sponge and will keep you cold for the entire 2-hour trip. Opt for synthetic materials that wick moisture and dry quickly. Best options: Board shorts, rash guards, or athletic "dry-fit" shirts.

  • River Comfort

The moment you get out of the water and back to your car, you’ll want to dry off. What to bring: Keep a dry towel and a change of clothes in your car. You might want to keep hydrating drinks and snacks in your car to enjoy after your float.

Provo River Tubing: Valuables & Storage Tips

The Provo River is famous for claiming "offerings" like car keys, wedding rings, and expensive smartphones. If it doesn't float and isn't strapped to you, it belongs in your car or our secure storage.

  • Secure Key Storage

Don't risk losing your electronic key fob in the river. We provide a complimentary secure key storage in our shuttle vans so your car is ready for you when you finish.

  • Waterproof Phone Cases

If you plan to take photos, ensure your phone is in a dedicated waterproof pouch with a lanyard. We recommend keeping phones tucked inside your PFD for extra security through the ripples.

  • Waterproof Dry Bag

Don’t risk your items getting soaked in the splashes. We offer professional-grade waterproof dry bags for rent, available to reseve at check-out. These rugged, roll-top bags clip directly to your tube, raft or kayak, keeping your essentials 100% dry and secure while you navigate the river.

Three Reasons Why Our Tubing Trips are Superior

  • Expert Drivers & Staff

Every staff member is a fully certified Provo River Guide, trained specifically for the river’s cold water, swift currents, and narrow limestone channels. They provide expert guidance, assistance and ensure everyone in your group has a safe and memorable experience on the water.

  • River-Specific Gear

We own HazardPlay™ tubes. Custom-designed specifically for Provo River tubing, our tubes are engineered for the Provo River’s cold, fast, and rocky environment delivering better durability, maneuverability, comfort and maximum safety.

Provo River Tubing FAQs — EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Is tubing on the Provo River safe for kids?

Tubing is recommended for strong swimmers ages 13 and up (minimum 5'2"). For families with younger children or non-swimmers, Pro Rafting Tours offers safer options like inflatable kayaks and 3-4 person rafts.

How cold is the Provo River for tubing?

The Provo River is 45°F year-round. Tubing involves sitting directly in the water, which can cause numbness. We recommend kayaks or rafts for a warmer experience.

What makes your tubes different from other outfitters and rental shops?

We use exclusive HazardPlay™ tubes, custom-engineered for the Provo River's rocky conditions, offering superior maneuverability and safety compared to standard vinyl tubes.

Do I need a reservation for Provo River tubing?

Yes, reservations are highly recommended as trips sell out weeks in advance. If tubing is full, we offer a Kayak Upgrade for a lower price.

What should I wear for a Provo River float?

Secure water shoes or strapped sandals are required (no flip-flops). A long-sleeve quick-dry shirt is strongly recommended to prevent sun exposure and tube chafing. If you're concerned about the high possibility that you will get snagged in the bushes and scratched, inflatable kayaks or rafts might be the best option for you.

Where do we meet for the trip?

Meeting locations are in Provo Canyon at designated spots provided in your confirmation email. We do not meet at the Orem office for river launches.

Are life jackets required for Provo River tubing?

Yes. Everyone must wear a life jacket on the river. We offer all guests US Coast Guard approved life jackets and carry sizes from extra small to XXXL for tubers. Our jackets are inspected, clean, and comfortable to wear for the duration of your trip.

What’s the best time of year to tube the Provo River?

The peak tubing season is June through early September, when river levels and water temperature are ideal. Early spring and late fall trips are better for rafting and kayaking because the water can be cold and fast, so proper gear is recommended.

How long does a Provo River tubing trip take?

A typical tubing trip lasts 90-120 minutes, depending on the river stretch and your pace. This includes time for your shuttle, launch, float, and exit the river safely.

Can tubes be linked together?

Yes, but only for parents to connect to youth by using a short strap. A maximum of 3 tubes can be linked and adult-to-adult linked tubes is strongly discouraged because it creates a safety hazard for everyone on the river.

Tip: Singles tubes are designed for solo floating. For families or groups who want to stay together safely, we recommend booking a raft or tandem inflatable kayak for the best experience.

Can I bring drinks or snacks while tubing?

Not really. Tubing on the Provo River is a strenuous activity that requires you to use both hands continuously to paddle and steer to avoid obstructions, snags, and other people. You can bring hydrating drinks, but no foam coolers or large food items. The Provo River flows through private property, so stopping along most parts of the river before the train bridge is not permitted. For safety, we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who appears intoxicated or impaired by substances.

Tip: Bring water or sports drinks to stay hydrated and energized during your float. For a fully relaxed experience, consider booking a private raft or kayak where you can enjoy our catered riverside refreshments and inflatable boats with your group.
