Why Inflatables are Best for Deer Creek State Park

  • Stability First:

Our commercial-grade inflatables are wider than plastic kayaks, making them nearly impossible to flip.

  • The 'Dry' Ride:

Unlike "sit-on-top" hard shells that leave you in a puddle, our kayaks feature self-bailing floors that drain water instantly.

  • Comfort:

Enjoy adjustable, padded seats with back support—essential for 2-hour, full-day rentals and lessons.

Why Kayak & Stand Up Paddleboard at Deer Creek State Park?

  • Scenic Alpine Beauty at 5,400 Feet

Deer Creek Reservoir sits at approximately 5,400 feet in elevation and is surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains, including iconic views of Mount Timpanogos. The reservoir’s wide shoreline and 360° alpine scenery attract over 300,000 annual visitors — yet its large footprint means paddlers rarely feel crowded on the water.

  • Calm Water Conditions for Beginners

With 2,965 surface acres, Deer Creek Reservoir offers wide, open stretches ideal for beginner kayakers and stand up paddleboarders. Average summer morning wind speeds range between 6–10 mph, making early morning paddles especially smooth and beginner-friendly.

  • Family-Friendly Lake Recreation

Kayaking and paddleboarding at Deer Creek State Park are suitable for ages 5 and up. We offer child-sized equipment and extended-size safety gear to ensure comfort and proper fit, allowing families to paddle safely together.

  • Ideal Conditions for Kayak & SUP Lessons

Most first-time paddlers can learn basic balance and stroke techniques in 1–2 hours with instruction. The controlled conditions of the reservoir — especially in protected areas like the Wallsburg Channel — create an ideal learning environment.

  • Professional, Fully Inspected Equipment

All kayak and paddleboard rentals include high-quality, professionally maintained gear. Equipment is thoroughly inspected and cleaned to ensure safety, reliability, and performance on the water.

  • All-Day Paddle Access

Summer daylight at Deer Creek runs approximately from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, creating exceptional opportunities for all-day paddling. Early mornings offer calm water and soft alpine light, while evenings provide warm reflections across the reservoir. We operate June through late September.

  • Excellent for Fitness & Cross-Training

Kayaking can burn approximately 300–500 calories per hour, while stand up paddleboarding may burn 400–600 calories per hour. Both activities provide a low-impact, full-body workout that strengthens the core, shoulders, back, and legs.

  • A Photographer’s Dream Location

The wide surface of Deer Creek Reservoir reflects surrounding mountains and sky, creating ideal conditions for landscape photography. Golden hour provides especially dramatic lighting. Dry bag and waterproof phone case rentals are available to help protect cameras and smartphones while on the water.

Deer Creek State Park Paddling FAQs & 7 Tips for a Perfect Lake Day

Below are the most common questions we get from guests and Deer Creek State Park visitors. Look for the Tips below to find our expert advice on kayak and stand up paddleboard rentals, lessons and safety.

Where do we meet for kayak and paddleboard rentals at Deer Creek State Park?

Tip #1: Look at your confirmation to know where to meet for your rental or lesson. We meet at three (3) designated launch locations inside Deer Creek State Park, typically at the Wallsburg Channel (calm water zone), the Main Entrance reservoir area and Sail Boat Beach. Your confirmation email includes instructions. Always arrive 10 minutes early to allow time for park entry, parking and check-in.

Do I need a lesson to rent a kayak or stand up paddleboard (SUP)?

Tip #2: No, you can rent even if you do not have much experience. Our kayaks and paddleboards are beginner-friendly and stable. We'll give you instructions and a safety briefing before you launch. However, if it’s your very first time paddling, we recommend booking a lesson to learn basic technique, paddling efficiency, and things you can do to feel confident on the water.

Are there weight limits for kayaks and stand up paddleboards?

Tip #3: Choose paddlecraft that will be the most comfortable for you so you have an easy and relaxed time on the reservoir. For safety and performance: Single Kayaks: 220 lbs, Tandem Kayaks: 500 lbs combined, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs): 250 lbs. If you are close to a weight limit, or over 6 foot 3 inches tall, contact us so we can recommend the best option.

What is the best time of day to paddle at Deer Creek Reservoir?

Tip #4: Plan for the type of paddle you want, considering possible windy conditions and boats on the lake. Mornings and evenings offer the calmest water conditions. In the afternoons, wind and motor boats are common at Deer Creek, especially on the wide-open areas of the reservoir. For beginners, we strongly recommend the protected Wallsburg Channel or booking a sunrise or sunset launch.

Are life jackets required for paddling on Deer Creek Reservoir?

Tip #5: Yes. Expect to wear them. Utah law requires every person to wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times when boating on Deer Creek State Park reservoir. We offer all guests high-quality life jackets (personal floatation devices, PFDs) and carry sizes from toddlers, kids, extra small to XXXL adult. Our PFDs are inspected, clean, and comfortable to wear for the duration of your rental or lesson.

Is there a separate entrance fee for Deer Creek State Park?

Tip #6: Yes. Be aware of the state park entrance fee and plan your day in the park so you can enjoy all of the amenities while you're there. Deer Creek State Park charges a day-use entrance fee per vehicle, payable at the gate. This fee is separate from your rental cost. Utah State Park passes are accepted. With your day pass into the park, you can enjoy many recreational activities and access to other locations within the park.

What should I bring for kayaking or stand up paddleboarding at Deer Creek?

Tip #7: Plan ahead so you and your paddling partners have everything you need for a smooth, stress-free day at Deer Creek State Park, whether you’re renting gear, taking a lesson, or relaxing at the beach. We recommend bringing: Refillable water bottle (hydration is especially important at high elevation), sunscreen and a wide-brim hat, secure sandals or water shoes, sunglasses,  layered clothing (mountain weather can change quickly), lunch and snacks for energy between paddles.
